There is some skill involved. You have to remember to shut off the fert when you stop. The mechanism has to be easy to reach and sure, so you can start and stop while steering and using the throttle. Jerky stops and starts are not good. Applying with a tow-behind can be a bit tricky when feeding tight areas or if you have to back up.
Probably the type that mounts on the front with an electric impeller is better.

Of course, you can use your regular spreader. You just need to find a way to tow it and how to shut it off and on.
Keep in mind if you tow it backwards--thee impeller will spin in the opposite direction.

This is overkill for residential use, but if you have lot's of acre's to take care of, these machine's are at the top of the heap.

Seems like it would be hard to do a good job spreading behind yourself

4 wheeler with a drop spreader mounted on the back works great once you get used to shutting on and off on the run!
