If it were a choice between a subcompact and a mini skid, I'd vote mini skid. If I was going to choose between a mini skid and a compact, I'd go with a compact.

The compact offers great versatility. Where a sub compact won't be able to do as much. It depends on the work being done. If you can't get into a tight area and do it on a regular basis I'd stick with a mini skid.

yanmar cub cadet sc2400 is a well thought out machine with good quality. probably the cheapest price out of most comparable brands.
