I'm starting to understand this completely, and my conclusion is that the people who make the most noise about this subject are the ones who understand that their talents simply aren't enough to demand the ridiculous prices that they have been able to snowball people with in times past. When any potential client has the ability to confront them on their prices, I honestly believe that they simply don't have the nads to look them in the eye and say: "yes, the cost of materials is only 20% of the proposal..... the other 80% is because I think I'm a God of lighting." Give me a break!
And Solecki, would you please just shut up? You really make it harder to enjoy the other contributor's point of view..... Thanks..... I did say please by the way.

To James, the OP:

Ive been an electrical contractor for 30 years and almost all of the materials I install are available in the local big-box store or online. The solution for me was to get away from time and material pricing and go to task pricing and project quotes. This has been beat to death in another electrical forum with strong opinions.

Also consider the client:
A 24 year old...checking material prices on the internet...very cheap and stingy. Unless I had other very profitable work from this client, I'd be glad to see him go.

Tiger, I agree with that statement with only one exception. You will not find quality LV landscape lighting fixtures or LED components for LV systems in the big box store. It simply isn't gonna happen.

I get that. In high end interior lighting the same situation exists where there is very expensive lighting and the material markup is a substantial part of the overhead and profit.

I think it is Michael Stone in "Markup & Profit A Contractor's Guide" who promotes covering business costs without markup. The advantage to his model is that if the client supplies the fixtures, you haven't lost anything.

My business in residential service is different in that materials are only 10-15% of the job quote. Conduit is pretty cheap.
