I'm a little confused. You're asking which balancer would work best for your JD 717, and if "it" (the balancer) can sharpen anything else.

The balancers and sharpeners are 2 individual products.

See Here:

The MAG-1000 balancer is the standard in the industry and would be the recommended balancer for lawn mower blades. Our balancers can check the balance on most anything that is made of magnetic material and has a center mounting hole (see size range at our website)

Of the 2 sharpeners - it is a decision between what kind of blades you have. Since lawn mower models and aftermarket blades are ever changing - i do not know what kind of blades are on your specific model/year of your mower.

Here is how to tell what sharpener is best for you.

MAG-8000 - is able to sharpen conventional straight edged blades & curved cutting edge mulching blades.

MAG-9000 is ONLY able to sharpen conventional straight edged blades.

The MAG-8000 is our universal machine and is able to almost any lawn mower blade.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
