The Confront Granular Story

The short answer to your question is yes. We have two new versions of Confront for 2005. One of them, Confront TR, is currently registered in NY. To learn more about this product click here

If you want the full story (long answer) read on........

The Confront product you have heard so much about is our original ProScape 19-2-9 Confront. This product was a tremendous success because it actually worked! We got much higher control on many turf weeds than is typical of granular applications. Unfortunately there were some persistence issues with clopyralid, one of the components of Confront. Clopyralid can remain in the leaf tissues of treated turf. Clippings from treated turf could damage sensitive plants if they were used or discarded in the wrong place. For example, a vegetable garden. To avoid the potential for this off target herbicide damage the manufacturer voluntarily agreed with EPA to remove residential lawns from the clopyralid label. By doing this it would be much less likely that homeowners would unwittingly put clopralid where it should not be when collecting and disposing of grass clippings.

For the last two years we have been working on new formulations to replace clopyralid while maintaining the efficacy. The first to emerge was Confront TR, a formulation based on the Turflon chemistry. We also started to experiment with a new molecule called fluroxypyr in combination with other herbicides. Fluroxypry is a cousin of clopyralid with similar properties but without the persistence issue. It has just recently been registered by the EPA and we have just gotten our new registration for Confront 3. This latest version of Confront is called Confront 3. It is the third generation product and also happens to be a 3-way combination. Fluroxypyr is not yet registered in the states of CA and NY so registration of Confront 3 is pending in those states as well. In the interim Confront TR is a great alternative.

So how does it work? Any time you change the components of a herbicide you can expect the results to change. Our field trials with Confront TR and Confront 3 both show very promising results on a wide range of broadleaf weeds. Control varies slightly based on weeds species, but in most cases it is very similar to the control achieved with the original Confront. Confront 3 will be the stronger product for clover control, but both 3 and TR will have improved Dandelion and Plantain control with faster onset of symptoms.

Recap

Original Confront: Still available on 19-2-9 base and with Team, not for use on residential lawns

Confront TR: Available on a new 19-0-6 small particle base with 33% MESA. Registered for use in NY, use on most turf sites including residential lawns.

Confront 3: Available on the new 19-0-6 small particle base with 33% MESA, registration pending in CA and NY. Will soon be available on a straight granular base for spot treatments and IPM applications. OK for use on most turf sites including residential lawns.

We have applied for registration of both Confront TR and Confront 3 in Connecticut. Our regulatory department expects it will be approved within a week or two.
