coloring up beds

I have searched this, but could not find anything. I have a landscape project. Basically the customer wants her already existing beds to be filled with some color with small plants, such as annuals and some small border grass. I know how to calculate how much mulch I need, but I do not know how to calculate how many plants I will need according to the square footage of the beds. How far apart are you guys planting and is there anything like a mulch calculator that can help me determined the amount of plants needed. Thanks

How far apart depends on the plants you choose. Just ask the nursery or consult a garden book to figure out how much space each plant needs.

It also depends on whether she's patient or into instant gratification.
