Yo Willie

What's the deal with the Detroit V92?

What was it used in?

Why do you like it?

How many do you own?

What makes it special?

Pictures?

You know Bob, I don't know why I put that as my signature.

Never used one or anything. I think I was trying to think of something I like to put in my sig, and thats the first thing that came to me. Huh. I'm weird

Own any? Well, not yet...

i have seen the 8/92 used in smaller harbor tugs. more often it would be 12/71's both natural and turbo. many utility boats would have 2 12/71's while crewboats would run between 3 or 4 depnding on the builder and size. one thing i always liked about detroits is how fast the power came on. where cat or cummins would have to build the detroit performed much more like a 2 stroke dirt bike. hit the power and it was there. very cool feeling when you hit the power band on an engine that big. as far as how they worked in construction application i can't say. but offshore i'll take a detroit diesel or EMD over any other makes.
good luck,

As a kid I used to work on lobster boats down here ,the boat I worked on had a 3408 Cat turbo 500hp ,it was a 43 footer Torres ,they are very popular for this kind of work ,these people had another ,a 42 #1 ,with the same power ,but that was the only two cats around here ,the rest were Driptroit on this size boats were mainly V 1271 twin turbos back then 650hp they were a little faster empty ,our bout will do 21 to 22 knots empty ,the Detroits will beat us for about 2 to3 knots ,but boy we were the fastest boat in the hall town when loaded to the guills we put 250 lobster traps (25,000 lbs) and still do 18 or 19 knots ,no other boat came close to that boat the rest with Detroit will haul 200 traps and do about 8 to 10 knots ,our other boat had a different cab so we can only put 200 traps but again 17 to 18 knots there was the fastest boat El Boss 43 Torres v1271 the only time he planed 200 traps was with very little fuel load and when hit deep water it fell off plane ,those Detroits were fast ,but only when they were empty and also used a lot more fuel than the big Cats the 892s allways broke down ,my God father had one and it spend more time at the shop than working ,today those boats are running around with 3412 twin turbo Cats 1,400hp ,and some have C18 1,150 hp running as fast as the 3412 or slightly faster for weight reason ,but no more Detroits around here,

The beautiful sound of a 8v92

www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QD8qlC-_xA

This is the 6v92

Make sure you turn up the speakers

I have driven both 8v92 and 6v92 both make lots of noise they are decent engine.

It is fun driving old 2 stroke detroits you never lift your foot off the throttle and shift without the clutch.

Damn Willie, words cannot express my disappointment.

At least Gravel Rat saved you with some cool links.

Think about that for a second, Gravel Rat saved you. How do you feel about that?

Don't worry, Bob. One day, I'll have a whole fleet of Detroit powered trucks
But seriously, if I get a Detroit powered truck and learn to drive it before I graduate high school, its gonna be my ride to school! Not even kidding. Drive by there and open 'er up!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, GR saved me? Thems fightin' words!
