Of course you can, the resistance of the additional wire is nil.

Thanks for all the input everyone! It turned out to be a bad back-plane, it had a 2007 date stamp the controller was upgraded to an SMT two years ago. I ran a 5 min test cycle on all valves and didn't get the random short fault alarm on the controller and all valves were testing close to 38 ohms.
