There is the small amount of magnetic steel in a solenoid, but I doubt a metal detector makes much of it. Every now and then, I encounter one of the old valve marker spikes that were installed to give a metal detector something to find. They were a square of steel welded to a spike, and painted yellow or orange.

Thanks for the advice. Found the problem. Wasn't the value. After 3.5 hrs of digging, probing, cussing found the problem. Notice a small puddle forming in a low spot that wasn't there an hour ago. Shut the water off and bubble form along with more water. Any ways dig it up and find three hyd line in between two 1 1/2' roots. Which in turn a puncture hole in one of the lines. Removed about 4' of the roots to create slack in the lines. Repaired the line and install a value box for future repair if needed.

Ive used dowsing as well. Used them to find lateral lines in a high school baseball field just a couple of months ago. It's been so dry here that they were almost pinpoint with the water in the pipes. I used 2 irrigation flag wires with the ends bent 90 degrees to hold onto.

I have a question - what the heck is a "value" in a sprinkler system? I know what a "valve" is, but a "value"? the "v" and "u" aren't very close on the keyboard.
