I purchased a 3100 last spring, and it has been nothing but trouble ever since. The motor was replaced at 189 hours, and leading up to that I put more hours on a loaner machine from the shop. This year I have only managed another 200 hours and it is back in the shop. I will getting rid of the mower when I get it back. I have lost more money in down just driving to my dealer for the loaner machine. not to mention watching my helper stand around while I finish mowing with my other machine. I know it is not typical for these machines but I will not buy another one.

the problems that have been stated such as rods going through blocks and hydro components incorrectly assembled *on the inside* all sounds like their respective mfg's issues as was stated already. Ferris employees do not assemble engines nor do they assemble hydro pumps/wheel motors. These parts are bought by Ferries from Hydro Gear, Parker etc... as complete units and then mounted on their mower.
Now, the cracked oil cooler housing is also an outside mfg, but if it was mounted incorrectly or negligently by a Ferris tech, thats a different story, same goes for the fuel filter as the lines etc.. are installed by Ferris. Start talking about frame cracks, bad decks/spindles etc... and that is Ferris territory. I owned a Ferris before and it had its share of issues, nothing compared to my walker but it would still annoy. Thats why I'm running all Scag soon....Flame On!

Its all about dealer support when making purchases. My 3100 has had nothing but problems for 1.5 years, to clarify my 37 horse kawi. I brought it back yet again the other day and my dealer uncrated, set up and sent me away with a new 3100 with the brigs big block. I cant say enough about how they have been to my company.

You had the old-style head design on your 37 I feel assured, from Serial # A06171 forward is the new head; which from what I've been told has eliminated all prior problems, and increased fuel economy considerably.

So far new mower and engine running smooth. I have not really had enough grass to cut to compare fuel economy. I had similar problems with two different kawi motors. The origonal was replaced after 189 hours. I will post more thoughts after I get a chance to collect a little more data.

I would like to know if the two 37's that gave you problems were after Serial # A06171, can you find this information please? I honestly doubt they were, but it would sure be interesting to know.

The black slime / debris in the fuel tank is probably shavings from the fuel tank. Once the tank is molded then the holes for the fuel lines are drilled. The tank MFG will then use a vacuumed like piece of equipment to remove any filling that may go into the tank. If some of those plastic pieces are missed and sucked up in the fuel line in may cause a fuel issue or a plugged fuel filter. In most cased the fuel filter will catch all of the piece when sucked up with the fuel line. The oil cooler is installed by the enigne MFG and could of happened on any product that uses this make of eninge. Wheel Motor issue that is something the dealer will have to look at. Those wheel motors are Parker Hannifin wheel motors and generaly do not get weak. If they have an issue normally they break and it is game over.
