Hairy bittercress. Winter annual--probably sprouts in the fall and overwinters.
Its like chickweed; treat in fall.

Summer annual and biennial too. nasty stuff. We did some plantings mid-summer in an existing bed. That stuff popped like crazy about 10 days later. What a mess. Customer was extremely upset. I gotta get a handle on it this spring since I know its ready to pop or has already...

Winter annuals are not supposed to pop up in the summer--only summer annuals, like purslane and spurge. North country. Is it really cold where you are? Is summer just 6 weeks of bad skiing? LOL!

In any event weed control works better if you hit the weeds early. Try to hit them when they are less than 2 inches tall or two inches wide in the case of viny weeds.

Well I'm 99% sure it was bittercress. Strange. I was thinking the same thing. Why would it pop midsummer? Lots of it too. Made a nice carpet. Ugghh.

Im gonna hammer the beds as soon as this snow melts (have to plow tomorrow though lol). Should be an intersesti.g test to see if I can nip it in the bud so to speak.

Thanks again guys for all your help on this ID. Here is something I observed. All the yards that I applied pre-m are full of this bittercrest. Those yards that I did not treat have just a little. WTH. I even have two football fields that I treat which are full of this stiff too. Just outside of the fields beyond the sidelines...hardly any. SMH.

The main problem with hairy bittercress is that it mostly germinate's in the spring when your fall pre-emerge is wearing off. It is such a prolific seeder that it can take 3-5 year's and perfect timing to get it under control.

Whoops. Hairy bittercress is also a summer annual. My mistake. Mustard family.

The elongated seed pods explode when mature--throwing the tiny seeds a distance of several feet. This makes it a difficult weed at times. It can even spread in a green house from one pot to another.

That's nasty looking stuff and I've been seeing some the past week or so while doing other treatments. I put down some 4 Speed last week in an area that had some in addition to the henbit, so I'll have to read the label to see if it will control the bittercress. I hope so.
