think I scored on a truck today

I just got back from buying a 97 F450 with a 12 foot flat bed with detachable sides. It has the 7.3 turbo with 140k. 3500 cash. Every thing is good except the reverse. (I think there I can replace the gear without dropping the whole trans.) The carpet is getting ripped out tomorrow and hopefully a roll in bed line will go in its place I will get pic up tomorrow to dark right now how do you think I did.

No telling, it's a truck, all depends what's wrong with it, a friend of mine bought a diesel years ago for a good deal and it seemed to run all right but it turned out later it needed a major engine overhaul that was going to cost in the thousands... Way we learned, you really need to have someone with you that knows a little of something about these trucks before spending any money, reverse in a truck isn't optional like it is in a car, due to the truck's wide steering radius you really almost can't do without... Not trying to scare you but I hope it turns out all right for you.

You definitely cant replace reverse gear without removing trans. That should have a ZF5 trans, the parts are expensive and it is one of the harder ones to disassemble. Used ones go for around $1000 around here. Not sure about 97, but the older F450's have the parking brake on the back of the transmission and use a 4x4 trans without the transfer case. (The park brake assembly mounts to the flange where the transfer case would... a 2wd trans wont adapt)
