I signed up years ago, during the heaviest part of the Iraq war. They gave me 2 lawns to cut. One "customer" took us up on the offer, but then insisted on giving tips and sodas to the guys and then sent me a gift card at the end of the year.

The next year they assigned me to a second person. But she wouldn't give me her address. She felt bad accepting the gift. I emailed and called, but she kept saying "I'll let you know when I need you". Maybe she thought it was a scam.

We've been signed up for years with them now, we have yet to get any lawns through them directly. Each truck has the green care for troops logo on it. About 1'w x 1.5' high. A lot of people will ask us about it, and a few have recommended a friend/family member/neighbor directly to us and we have just contacted them directly offering our services.
Why do people not respect us as they do other tradesmen? Because every Tom, Dick, and Harry doesn't think he can be a plumber or electrician!

As a vet myself I signed up and turned down the first two referrals I got.

National Guard getting deployed.

Half million dollar home. Doctor with a private practice, wife is an engineer.

Second one I turned down was husband was an engineer and wife is a chef in a top restaurant...lived in a $250,000 home in a gated community.

I'm sure there are people that need it, but I'm not donating my time for people looking for a freebie when they could afford it. I would have given a military discount regardless of income and neighborhood, but to sign up for a service for free just because you're deploying? C'mon don't be selfish.

I've stayed on, but I'll only take on those that actually need it.

I served 8 years in the USMC. I signed up years ago for both Green Care and Snow Care for Troops. I have helped 6 different families in the GR area. I even got national recognition by Trace Adkins on Great American Hero's for my support.
I will always be indebted to veteran's. If it was not for them, I would not be here!

I have been a member for quite awhile now. I have been called four or five times. I was able to accept two cuts but had to turn down two due to having to drive 30+ miles one way to Greenfield. Havenot done any in quite awhile.

@ Saber, had the same thing happen to me here in RI. The husband (CMDR, Navy) was deployed and they lived in home that was three times the size of my house, BMW SUV, and had two mid-aged teens that had apparently never moved far from the 65" flat screen and playstation. I told her that I would send her an estimate for the work she was asking help with such as weeding beds and walkways, lawn fertilization making sure to spray the weeds, and mowing. I told her I dont mow lawns, but would be more than happy, for an hourly fee, use her brand new John Deere lawn tractor that was setup to the hilt with "extras".
She started to ask about "Free", when I subtly asked how she heard about the volunteer program for helping in need military families, GreenCare program. And followed up with, I am happy to help you and as a disabled veteran its nice to know that if I needed help that people such as our selves our here to help. She said "Oh, your a disabled veteran?" and I smiled and shook my head and thanked her and her husband for their service.

I did not hear back from them ever....

"Either your Boatswain Mate or you work for one"

I have received three emails from them in the past couple months. The first one locked my computer up and totally ticked me off. The last two I deleted without opening. I will find my own families to help.
