If anyone is running the big Honda engines they are terrible for this. At least once a season is a must. I blow my machines off at almost every yard after used with my back pack before loading back up. My Kohler EFI has much less of a problem with getting plugged I think because it has bigger openings and maybe a finer screen on the flywheel. Haven't check my 31 Kawasaki yet at 60 hrs. I also try and let a engine warm up a minute or so before using and cool of for a minute or so before shutting off. I don't know how much this really helps but I'm guessing over the life of 3000 hrs plus it might help to squeeze a little more out of it.

Inspect and clean prior to being put into service each spring too. Even if you cleaned in the fall. If there are mice present they will often make nests up under mower engine shrouds. Pay more attention to this cleaning practice during the times of year that rodents might be looking to come in out of the cold.

I have found it best to pull the shrouds and soak it down with simple green and then hit it with the hose, Removes any and all oil films which will collect dust. My motors are kept extremely clean this way. Just cover the carb and coils with sandwich bags and rubber bands.

Hondas are notorious for this and I have also noticed that when I take the cover off most of the grass and debris is on the left side of the engine also.

Just for info, Did you know Kohler has clean out panels for less than 14 bux....

I've made covers for Kawasaki and see no reason why they couldn't be made for Honda and even Generac which has twice the screws needed to hold the top on, All you need is a piece of thin plate steel and four clips and screws that most hardware stores carry.

Wouldn't you think, if it were easier to clean your fins you'd do it more often ?
