I moved that valve guide a little bit but got to the point I was dead sure I would break my bolt. Now I could go get a hardened bolt but.......isn't that guide a oil impregnated part. If I crack that guide inside on the tappet end i woudl be in a ton of hurt. So mite this be one of the things where I leave it lay for the time being?

As long as you have full travel of the valve...and you can get the spring and retainers back on...let it ride...it was running like that before....

I lapped the valves and ground stems to set .003" clearance and put it together it won't start. Got the ole leak test tool and I am leaking from exhaust big time. The surface was really cupped so I am not surprised. What is still a little funny is I got the unit to start and run about 15seconds two times and then nothing and that is when I dug in. Probably pull it for the time being and get a Kohler out of moth balls.

Sorry to hear that....ED...
If you were a little closer I could have probably dug a usable valve out of an old block...if the valve faces and seats dulled when you lapped them..without any shiny areas...they should have seated...the only other thing I might have suggested was to set the valves at .006...the far limit of the spec...because the clearances shrink as the valves wear in...
If you ever get an opportunity to buy the NEWAY valve cutter or seat cutter kits...they do nice work.....pretty pricey though...

I hang around the local McCoys shop on saturday so I will pull the engine
off and take it in and pull the pan off. Then I will get the head repair person to check it over to determine whether to put more money in it. He lets me use their tools as long as I stay within eye sight of him. My lapping tool was a wood dowel looking thingee with suction cups on each end. With Kohler I could take a drill and attach to stem and do a real grind job. They might have an old engine or some valves.

I took the engine in to McCoys and he showed me how to use the valve grinder and the seat grinder. I still have to lap it in but at least I got
better results on leak tester.
