What to do with Z71

I just bought a Z71 pick up wit the engine going out.

98 Z71 5.7 litre transmission rebuilt just 6 months ago. Has new radiator. Truck is in good shape. I got it for $800 from a friend because I had done some work for him.

My question is do I rebuild this engine or put a used one in it?

Half of me says to put in a different used one and the other half says a crate engine! Maybe something that can turn around 550 hp. Probably would not do to well for say to day working.

I would contact a gm dealer and get a new engine. I done that with a truck one time and was well pleased and I got a warranty also.

go to a salvage/junk yardand see what they have avliable, as i recall, a new engine isn't more than a couple tousand dollars, but i am not sure for this engine, put a new one in, and the truck will last forever

How many miles on it ? look in your area and see what a similar one is selling for. DO NOT INVEST more money in it then the book value or what they are selling for in your area. Insurance companys only have to pay fair market value. If that truck is worth $5000 book value it does not matter that a $2500 transmission and $5000 motor are in it you are only going to get $5000 if it happens to get totaled or stolen.

The truck has 246,000 miles on it. The engine has not thrown a rod either so it can be rebuilt. I have a guy that will rebuild it for $800. I think that is a good deal. Just someone else said I should just get a used engine.

Just my opinion, if it cost 800 bux to rebuild, he is cutting alot of corners and you wont have a good engine. Last time I checked into it, a complete rebuild was about 1400 bux and you could get a new crate engine for around 1500. My prices may be off some, its been a while since I checked. The truck I replaced an engine in..........it was 50 bux difference in the rebuild vs the new engine and I almost forgot to add.......at 246k miles its going to need everything new (engine)

forget a rebuilt if you are going stock hp. Crate motor all the way, cant beat the warranty and it'll run great.
