For a roll-your-own skid-mount compressor, you can give eBay a try, entering your location as a search parameter, and seeing what kind of bare pump, or complete unit you can luck into. The key, is that the pump has "head unloaders" that allow it to be continuously driven by an engine. The most common brand name might be Ingersoll Rand, and other worthy names include Quincy, Curtis, Gardner-Denver, Kellogg-American. I posted a link to an auction for a new-old-stock Quincy pump last summer, something fairly humble in air capacity (low 20's) but something that might well outlive its owner.

My friend has one. He likes it for getting in and out quick. I used it once for a job with a 1/4 mile driveway up a steep hill with no turn around. It's ok for small places. I don't like it because it's gas. Every year he is cleaning the carb because in gets gummed up.

Prices are approximate, as I've had them for a few years now and don't remember.

Grimmer Schmidt 100 $1800-$2000 - we did put about $200-$300 and some elbow grease into this one, mainly for brake lights and paint.

I have a Grimmer-Schmidt 100 CFM compressor with real and hose for $2000. It has a rebuilt 302 engine with roller cam. Purrs like a kitten. It has external pressure regulator and gage. It works well for sprinkler blow outs and I have used it for 10 years, but I want to buy a sullair 175. If you are interested let me know.
