Our 1999 lazer hp 48" with kohler 18hp has about the same amount of hours. The oil gets changed once a year. 20 to 25 hours is absolutely ridiculous. I think it was Richard Martin on this forum that did UOA's (used oil analysis) to see just how far you can go in these hot little engines before an oil change is actually needed and it was way beyond even what the manuals recommend. EDIT: I could not find that thread but I did find this one. Analysis does not lie. http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.p...ght=blackstone

For my mowers, usually change the oil after break in of between 15-25 hrs... Change hydro filter after first 50 hrs... Then every 15-25 hrs change / clean air filters... Every 50 hrs change oil and filter... Check belts every 100 hrs or so, probably change between 350-500hrs... Then with 250 hrs, change hydro filter... Change fuel filter about every other year, or whenever I think it needs it.
Main thing, check oil (and coolant if applicable) daily. Sharpen blades as needed, usually every day for me. Hope this helps a bit.
