I have never bought a new mower. Every winter I take the deck off the ones that need it and sandblast and repaint them. I replace all fuel lines every couple of years. Spark plugs and the other obvious yearly.

I agree. Once I worked the bugs out of my used older machines, there is no way I would buy new. These things are like tanks. Grease it. Maintain it. Get a lifetime out of it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting thread. I sort of have a fear of buying new. I had a serious debt problem that i'm almost out of. I tell myself to just get a new mower and make the money back, but then i'm reminded of my old habits. I think if i had another back up mower i'd feel better.

I have never financed anything. I literally started with nothing. I had 18 lawns before I even got anything other than a push mower. I mowed lawns that took three tanks of gas to mow. Debt is a scary thing especially in these drought conditions and this sagging economy. I actually bought another diesel Kubota this year, a ZD-21 with 500 hours on it. Got a steal @ $4200. Mower shoulda cost me $7500. The deals are out there. I looked on Craigslist for a year and drove six hours one way to get it. But it was well worth it.

I don't mind the debt issue, but I get out of it ASAP. I financed a few things this year on a 4 year term and paid it off in 5 months. You just have to BE really smart with your money. Now if I knew I couldn't pay it off that fast I wouldn't finance, you waste a bunch of money that way. Sometimes I will finance even when I have the money just to get the credit and pay it off within 3-4 months. I just want to be able to finance anything I wanted to so if I wanted to add another crew I could go get everything I need without a hitch. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE VERY RESPONSIBLE.
