1975 briggs 16hp: Is electonic magneto available?
I have put a briggs 1975 16 hp cast iron engine on my stump grinder. After running rough for a few minutes, I lost ignition (almost no fire at all).
The point ignition had been removed and an enclosed electronic magneto was on it. Of course it is not "rocket science" to troubleshoot this and I did (having repaired thousands of motors when I had a small engine shop). Well, it turns out the magnetron was probably off a smaller engine because the posts on the coil were angled to fit a smaller flywheel. IS THERE A ELECTRONIC IGNITION (OR ADD ON) FOR THE CAST IRON MOTORS MADE BY BRIGGS PRIOR TO THE CHANGE IN 1981? WOULD IT WORK IF I MACHINED THE POSTS ON THE CURRENT MAGNETRON SO THE POST ANGLE MATCHES THE CURVATURE OF THE FLYWHEEL? If not, does anyone have all the parts underneath the point cover so I can reinstall the original ignition? I am not sure of the models that will interchange, but am certain at least the ignition parts for the cast iron motors 13hp thru 16hp prior to 81 will work. Thanks for any help/advice DT |

DT,
Sorry but there's no electronic coil for the early 16's, Trying to install one like they did on your's will not work. The coil mount post positioning compared to the electronic pick-up being on one side of the coil throws the ignition timing off so it will never run properly. Now, I have a customer with a old Gravely 4-wheel tractor that has the same 16 as your's. Seems every few months I was having to play with the points, I suspected a bad points plunger lobe on the camshaft. Rather than a cam replacement I installed one of THESE four years ago and it has been running fine since. Go back to the original points coil and add the "bug". I don't know about any other brand "bugs", But I know this one does work fine on my customer's engine......

I would go with Robs idea. I think all those igniters are the same. I used one from Oregon on a Toro Snowblower I fixed up for myself and its been running fine for 4+ years now.

They are a slick fix. I put one on my dads log splitter with an old Onan and it fires all winter long.

Ditto...Dutch...those gizmo's have saved alot of old eqpt from hitting the scrapyard...
Wish I had invented them...instead of the dumb old mower that runs on tap water..... ![]() At least they would have let me sell them....

Electronic ignition up grade
I'm running a 1975 cast iron 16 HP briggs on the back of my Allis Chalmers modle B farm tractor as a aux motor to power a "52 snow thrower. I did the electronic ignition up grade. The engine wouldn't run right after that. It backfired and sheared the flywheel key. I found out you have to get the magnets on the fly wheel repolarized. I had that done and needed to advanced the timing as far as it would go and it runs fine.
