Being he only has 6 customers that pay next to nothing. (6x$35 is peanuts) I would offer him a hundred for them. You have no way of knowing if the customer will want you to service their property. They could drop you after the first cut.

My question is what, if anything should I offer him for non-contract residential accounts?

A FRIEND would give those to you and you'd buy him a nice supper.

This is SO true. If he were a true friend, he let you have them AND put in a good word with the client's that you are close friends.

You'll hear a hundred different responses from 100 different people. The only thing that is really important is what they are worth to YOU. If they are profitable accounts which work well into your schedule and route, then, to you, they do have value. I personally think anything up to and including one month's gross is reasonable, but this late in the season, I would hesitate to pay very much, as they could easily drop you next spring, although if your friend has serviced them for several years, that probably isn't likely.

For sure, 6 lower paying this late in the season.....
for me the mowing season is pretty well over now.

I'd never think of charging a friend for those, but if he wanted to buy me and the wife a nice steak dinner I'd never turn him down.

That same true friend would also expect nothing in return.

A true friend wouldn't expect someone to give him anything. Business is business and the accounts are worth something. I would pay him a % of the gross for the accounts for a month or two. I'm in FL so all our clients are year round and they go for 1-3 months gross. I have seen some sell for 1 yrs gross but I think those people are crazy. Who wants to work for 2 years just to break even.
