This year is more extreme than those in recent past, with respect to the widespread drought that is going on. Much worse deal IMO.

Last year was also hot in July, but the drought areas were not nearly so widespread as this year. Seems 3/4 of the country is in drought, crops and lawns are burning up, etc. Not good.

Keep that High Pressure ridge right where it is. So far we have very nice sea breeze and temp below 100. Actually pretty nice for this time of the year.

Never seen it so dry here in West Michigan. Constantly drinking liquids - can't really do anything too stenuous. Guy is having me help him put up a fence in his yard. Have to do it early morning before the real heat hits.

It's been extreme here but it's different than any heat-wave I've ever experienced here in IL.

We've been over 100 for the last 3 days, and a total of almost 2 weeks with this heat wave.

The difference is the humidity and wind. Generally when we get a heat wave here, it will hit 98* or so with 98% humidity and no breeze to speak of. So it makes it horribly unbearable as you get soaked with sweat.

This year, it's been a hot with lower humidity. 100 + degrees and 5-10mph breezes. To me it actually hasn't been horribly bad to me. Uncomfortable yes, but not unbearable like years past.

Any moisture though is getting sucked out of the ground. Right now all the lawns in central IL are smoked and we're starting to see lawns die on us. Basically they are going from dormant to dead. I've got one lawn that is starting to show dirt.

We are now about 12-20 inches behind on rain this year (depending on where you stand in the state), and there is no relief in site from the drought.

Looks like I'll be pushing for lots of over-seeding this year to help get lawns back into shape for next year.
