Exmark with 25HP kholer blowing fuses

Hey guys. Can't really work on the mower until monday but i wanted to get some opinions. I have a 2002 exmark lazer with the 25 hp kholer on it. Yesterday it was running and shut off, due to a blown fuse. New fuse in it and with the key on it blows after 2 or 3 seconds. I also noticed it blew the red wire fuse originally, and the other fuse when i replaced the red one with a good 20 amp fuse. Replace the other one them back to blowing the red. Very odd. Not instantly though which tells me its not a direct short.

I put a 25 amp fuse in it which worked as a temp fix to get through the day. Finished that lawn and one more then blew the 25 amp fuse. Replaces the 25 amp fuse and finished another lawn to finish up the day. Tried unplugging the engine connector and the fuse didn't blow, not that that tells me much.

I did have to jump the truck twice that day with the mower (very bad day lol) and it ran fine after. I know thats probably not a good idea but i've done it a few times over the years with no problems.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

If you unplugged the engine harness and no longer blow fuses that's a sign the stator or regulator or both are blown/shorted, Likely from putting WAY too much load on the charging system jumping your truck.

Test the stator as outlined, if it passes replace the regulator, if it fails replace both the stator and regulator. You need a special test instrument to check the regulator, Putting a new stator in place of a shorted one and not replacing the regulator could short the new stator.

If you still have the factory fuse holders...replace them..
To isolate the charge system...unplug the 3 wire connector on the regulator..
Run it and see if it still blows fuses..if it still does...might be the clutch pulling too many of those things called amps....

Thanks restrorob, that chart worked perfectly. It ended up being the stator shorted to ground. Bit of a pain in the neck to swap but she's up and running agian
