I get the stick edger out of the truck once every 2 or 3 weeks. I do mostly older homes. When you have a 100ft run that varies from 2'' above sidewalk level to 2'' below a stick edger won't work. The sidewalk sank or rose, the dirt sank or rose or the grade was not right to start with. Most edging done with string trimmer.

Around concrete its a vertical edge. Never taper, that leads to short brown grass down here.

I have several places like that that I have to edge. I simply run the edger on the grass instead of the cement, then go the opposite direction (obviously) and it works excellent. Try it some time, it may work out good for you too.
