Crazy Starter
Have a 1993 MTGHS. Went to start it today (about 2 week down time). Completely Dead Battery (COMPLETELY-odd for this mower). Tried to jump battery. Mower engaged starter the instant positive jumper touched positive battery lead (body flipped up at time). So, disconnected positive from mower and charged battery fully. Mower engages starter when positive leads from mower touch positive post on battery. Replaced ignition switch and checked all connections in control panel. No change. Disconnected small lead (blue) to starter solennoid. Result...starter does not engage, but can hear small click in top of engine like ignition is on (switch in off position). Does anyone have a solution, or even a hint of what might be going on?

Sounds like you have a stuck/burnt relay......

Sounds like the bendix is stuck in the flywheel ring gear....which is keeping the solenoid engaged...turn the engine back and forth and see if the bendix retracts.

Thanks. I figured out it was a stuck /burnt relay. New one, and started as it should. Only now it cuts out after about 60ft on full. It seems like a fuel issue. And we did find where the fuel line could get pinched. Odd though for both a elect problem and a fuel problem to crop up at the same time. I have a feeling this isn't over yet.

replaced all fuel lines and filters. Pump seems to be putting out fuel (just a flow, no real pressure.). Mower seems to run better but still starts to stumble when blades engaged. or put under heavy load (steep hill) . Could this stillbe caused by a related elect problem?

These small pumps don't put out much pressure, As long as you have steady fuel flow you should be good there.
What engine is on this machine..... Model AND Spec numbers ? Try applying the choke just a little and see if the stumble goes away, If so the carb is running lean (partly restricted main jet) and needs a tear-down cleaning.....

Education time:
So if the relay is stuck/burned closed, then power instantly to the starter, and relay closed drains down the battery? |
