But I do know that apples to apples, in the Carlisle brand, a ribbed will ride at least twice as smooth as a slick. The turf damage is really not noticeable at all. The majority of your turf damage is caused by the rear tires.

So, if a smooth ride is important to you, go ribbed!

The "run flat" slicks on my mower are pneumatics with the capability of being able to operate without air pressure until they can be repaired. I run about 8 or 9 psi in them and they're extremely soft.
Now the slicks that are solid with no air are a different story....they ride really rough. Could that be the ones you are referring to?
As far as turf damage goes, I'm sure a tire with low pressure would cause more damage than a tire that was aired up tight (or solid).

No, I've run both. Solid filled are both heavy and ride horrible. I've had slicks on JD's, SCAG's, and Lazers. And have had ribbed on DC's and Hustlers.

The ribbed are a totally different tire construction compared to the slicks.

If you notice over the years, the mowers that people comment on as being "smooth riding", almost always come with ribbed front casters.
