There is no doubt that these social pages are very important to SEO. With the new google+ social interactions. Your Google + Local ranking may be just as if not more important than web placement. Also, Google loves Yelp from what I have heard. I try to get my reviews on Yelp and Google.

I tell everyone that a google places page is the single biggest thing you can do for free to show up quickly on google. I know lots of people don't like facebook but it does provide a way for your customers to stay connected to you for "free" and lets them share your good work. And I know some LCO's doing Pintrest. I'm not quite ready for that but I know it can work for people
