how much compost per 1000 sq ft?

I want to aerate, overseed and spread compost over a lawn. How many cubic ft of compost should I buy per 1000 sq ft? How thick should it be spread?

Thanks

You should over seed once your done with the compost, then roll the lawn with a roller to maximize seed to soil contact. You only want to put down 1/4 to 1/2 thick of compost. Make sure you have good compost that is as close as 0% weed free, otherwise it's useless.

I know theirs a way to calculate it, but I believe I forgot the equation. My guess would be a minimum of 1 cubic yard.

I have the calculation I was searching

Figured out how much you want to add compost.
Figured out how much sq feet do you have (Length X Width)

Take your total sq feet (1000), multiply by how much compost you need.
You need to convert the inches in fraction of a foot: Here is a table to help you out:

1/4" 0.0225
1/2" 0.045
1" 0.09
2" 0.17
3" 0.25
4" 0.34
5" 0.42
6" 0.50

So 1000 X 0.045 divided by 27 = 1.6 cubic yard
1000 X 0.225 = 0.83 cubic yard

So 1.6 cubic yard for 1000sq feet at 1/4 inch or 0.83 cubic yard for 1/2 inch thick.

Hope this helps!
