Mulch and aggregates are a nickel and dime business. At what cost are you going to incur to try this. Yes, I mean cost because there will be a cost. Start with initial outlay, holding costs, and on and on....

A full service provider (stone, pavers, aggregates, mulch, topsoil, triple mix, seed, various supplies, DELIVERY) etc... is the only way to go.

But that takes a huge investment as others have stated, on site staff, equipment and so on.....

Why not concentrate on your current business? There is no money in these mom and pop shops. Why not become the best landscaping company in your area? If you open a mower dealership, no one will buy from the competition... I know I won't... and then get to deal with PITA homeowners.

what about equipment rentals, does anyone have experience opeing their own equipment rental operation?

Expanding the business....thoughts from those who've done it...

That might work if you have enough capital to invest in equipment to do it and can compete with places like united rental which owns RSC rental on price and availability. You could also rent small tools and or trailers, pickup truck etc.
