That deck simply isn't made for mulching,IF you wanted to mulch you got the wrong machine.

It's a very basic, simple, side discharge machine. You won't have any luck trying to upgrade that stone age deck.

Just leave it be and use it as intended.

I just got a 48" cub commercial for around that price And I'm very happy with the deal. Really good cut, my first commercial mower and I'm impressed with it, now I just need a little more forearm endurance and I'll be in business.

Like mentioned above, I'm not sure that 13 hp Briggs is going to be what you are looking for, for mulching, especially running a full mulch kit. However, I'm sure you could throw a blocker plate on there and experiment with some blades for less than $100.00. Fab you a blocker, buy two sets of blades (mulching blades with the notch) in the back similar to scag's and then buy a set of wavy blades. One thing I've learned when adding that mulch plate, every deck is different, and the blades play a major roll in the cutting performance. I've had machines where wavy blades were the best thing smoking, where others the notch type scag blades worked the best. Heck right now, I have Gator blades with a mulch plate on a toro, which has always been said to be a no-no around here and the mulching performance is great. Full speed with no stragglers, no rows of grass, and minimum blow-out. Other machines I wouldn't have dared using gator blades with a mulch kit. Every machines different. Throw a plate on there and experiment with a few different sets.
