My main mower is a 61 inch fixed deck Wright Stander. I don't have any problems with scalping, but it does take a little more effort to avoid it.
The only minor issue is not being able to adjust the mowing height easily, but I still prefer the fixed deck because less moving parts means less down time. |

You HAVE to know the property which ever size deck you have. I've been thrown over the bars on several walkbehinds because of uneven spots or hidden objects next to beds etc... That's why I want to get rid of all my bigger walkbehinds and just use a 36 hydro for gated properties. However, I have been stopped in my tracks with my 36 also. Just have to read the landscape really good.

Anyone who thinks a floating deck won't scalp is a moron...if its a 48" deck it's still 48" of flat surface regardless of what type of mower it's on. If you learn how to operate either one you will scalp less. If you drive both mowers over a hump in the lawn they will both remove the top of the hump.
That being said I would only choose a floater because I like being able to change height of cut easily. Posted via Mobile Device |

I've scalped more with floating decks than fixed decks because I have more hours on floating decks.
Just learn the machine and the property and maybe you'll have to trim some dips and doodles every now and again.
