Age restrictions??

Are there any age restrictions for operating commercial mowers? I wouldn't think so but I was just curious. Thanks

States vary with laws, and that also depends on of your am owner operator or working for someone else. Here in mn, when I worked at resturant many years ago, you couldn't run the deep fryers because they were mechanical. You had to be 18.

I'm going out on a limb here, because I don't know the law that well, but I'm thinking it may well be a Federal law that prevents anyone from operating hazardous machinery until the age of 18. I've seen signs posted in numerous businesses through the years on machinery like compactors for cardboard.

I also think there are some exceptions for the agricultural industry, aka farmers, but I don't know if that covers hired help, or only family members. I'm guessing the latter. In actuality, it is probably unlikely that anyone would ever even check, unless you are in an urban area, but what I would be concerned about is my liability insurance and/or workman's comp, if they are an employee. I can easily see a situation where an insurance company would deny a claim if a person they deemed to be underage according to the law, was operating the equipment when an accident occurred. Kind of like allowing an underage or unlicensed driver to operate your truck. If something happens, your arse is grass.

Driving a commercial vehicle--whether a CDL is needed or not--is 18.

Operating power equipment is 16, for the most part. Check your individual state laws, but federal is 16 AFAIK.
