We got caught in one earlier this summer. Last property of the day the EAS goes off for a thunderstorm warning, we hurried and got 75% of the property done when the lights went out. A minute later lightning, hail and one hell of a downpour. We've never loaded up that quick before and I was soaked for the hour ride home.

I've got family in the Lakeland area and always thought it was the coolest thing to see a torrential downpour 15' away and the other side of the road never get a drop.

5-10 times a year is about the norm for us. Your out there trying to fit as much in as you can so you work up to the rain and sometimes it starts slow but sometimes it just lets go. About 6-7 years back I was out mowing with an old employee Jason and I was in the back when it just let loose the rain was so dense I could hardly see the truck to find my way back. On the way home lighting took out 2 transformers as we were driving under them. We get back not a dry spot on us could ring half a gallon of water out of your underwear.
It's coming down 5 inches and hour PLUS and the road poured it into the parking lot above and off to the side of my house. The parking lot was made to take run off but the drains failed. Next thing we know there is a river headed down the hill side through the woods into my front yard and down the side and exiting out the back. How bad can that be you think well we have a stone wall near the lot the water was flowing over the wall in a section 60 ft wide and the falls were 2 feet above the wall. The water came through our property with so much force that it scoured out our dry creek bed and deposited it on the back lawn in a span of about 20 mins. I built this so I know what it moved we used 42 tons of rip-rap and 40 tons of 3-5 inch river jack. It removed 300 feet or more of it so were talking 40 tons of rock not to mention all the sediment in just 20 mins. We got a check for 7500 from their insurance and I had plenty of side work that Oct and Nov. In some spots it dug the creek bed to a depth of 3 feet. |
