I live in Cana VA, on the state line with NC.
Last friday night the power went out and it wasn't storming at the time.
I figured it was a temporary brown out because even during and after a storm my power is never out for very long at all.
I had my truck and trailer backed in to go out the next day so I went out and fired up the truck and A/C.
I'm sitting there listening to the radio trying to get some news or information when an AM broadcast came in about Charleston WV being down and probably wouldn't have power for a week.
Just then all the magnolia leaves in my front yard lifted up about 3-4 feet and went flying south. That was the beginning.
The next day I borrowed a generator from a buddy so, I had a/c, fridge, sat tv, a fan and a coffee maker.
The power finally came on last night and I can tell you, I was almost at the point where I was gonna take a bath in the creek near my house.
My power came back on about 930 last night, about 72 hours after it went out.

What did I learn?
1.-Buy a generator.
2.-Don't put off a shower till the next day, ever.
3.-There is a major weak point in communication when the power is off, radio is doing a poor job for us when we need news.
4.-There should be a place to go and take a shower when the power is off for an extended time.
The local city owned community center (YMCA) should have been opened to any person that just needs to take a damn shower.
They are fully equipped for it.

Update: we are still without power and were informed by the power co. it would now be no sooner than the 8th before our power was restored. We are still without running water. We are going to a friends house tonight to shower. I am going to fill water jugs at their house. I was able to purchase gasoline today. There was no wait so either people have given up, the rush is over or I got lucky. There is no ice that I can find. I've noticed people are very greedy at times like these. I did notice today around 2pm while I was out getting gas a woman was watering her lawn, lol. That's the first time I've ever seen someone water around here. So we are now on day 4 and it's looking like this is not even the halfway mark. At least tomorrow I have my route to do so I will have something to do that gets me out of the house. Really ready for a home cooked meal. Didn't get many cleanups as the city told people to drag it to the curb and they would come pick it up at no extra charge.

We just had a crazy storm come through just the other day. We had 80 mph winds and constant streaks of lightning going through the sky. The news said it was the strongest winds we have ever had in VA history that was not from a hurricane. Over 800,000 people were out of power for 2-3 days and some will not have it back for a week. Craziest storm I have seen in 16 years.
