A $40 handheld thermometer from Harbor Freight has made a lot of diagnosis issues easier...
Pointing it at the exhaust pipes on twin cylinder engines will tell you how the engine is running..

Indeed, After reading your post i started thinking of all the other things I could diagnose with it. Next time im up at HF im definitely picking one up.
