You can take any mower and make it perform royalty different depending on the blades you use no matter how well they are maintained. I use mostly wavy mulch blades and it could kill the mower of I don't watch the speed in tall thick grass. Plus it will fill the deck with clippings. Same with some of the gators. That's what they are designed to do. Keep clippings in longer to chop them up better. Now if I put a high lift blade on it eliminates all of that. It cuts it and gets it all out quickly.

I don't have a 997 either, but do have a 1445 with the same engine. It takes quite a bit to bog it down.

Not a blade engineer

I'm not going to sit here and lie about knowing the blade characteristics or anything in depth about blades effecting power output. Although it does interest me, I was under the misconception that high lifts would keep the grass inside the deck cavity longer than the regular blades. As for as I know the blades on my TT are regular OEM's unless they installed a more effiecent after market blade but I never get that kind of luck. My dads JD is more than likely the same type as when he bought it knowing him.

I refuse to believe this kid. Looks like another JD bashing thread.

The 997 lacks power...okay whatever.

High lifts are designed to move a LOT of air, create a LOT of lift, and get the clippings out the doors, just like Jim said. Mulchers almost always have much less lift/move less air, and therefore allow the clippings to stay in the cutting chamber longer to get chopped repeatedly before going out the chute, or being driven by a luch kit back down into the turf. The more the clippings stay under the deck, the more power is required to keep chopping them.

???JD Hater???

Kind of knew this would get to some JD owners. Another thing I'm not close to being a kid but I have four of them so I know what to expect from them. I'm happy you believe in your JD and I believe its a good machine too, I still believe I saved some change and got more power with the Scag. When you put two diferent machines cutting in the same yard and one is lugging down and the opposite is not to me the one not lugging has more power getting to the blades or is designed better. I will be coming home from work Sept. 14th I will post pictures to show exactly what I'm talking about.

Do you work on an offshore rig? If so, there's another guy on here from down in your area that just bought a Scag Cheetah with the 36 HP Vanguard/60" deck, and he loves it. He works offshore too. Look up his threads. His forum name is Reath1 IIRC. Maybe you guys are friends on one of the rigs or something?
