what base for pavers?

I'm sure this has been answered.... What is the proper base to use for paver walks and patios?? We were going to use crushed limestone, but I've been seeing (how to shows) a soil and crushed stone base used. What's the right choice and why? We're bidding on a 700 sqft. job. It's our first one and we want it right in every respect... Thanks

Asj your local paver supplier what they recommend in your area, that will be the easist way to find out. Here we use R-Blend, a mix of crushed concrete with a little soil in it.

icpi stated many times that limestone is NOT a suitable base.

they said it was becuase the pieces are elongated and get slick when wet. This can cuase shifting and movement in the base.

The ICPI was talking about using limestone screenings for your paver bed, instead of concrete sand. ICPI recommends 3/4 stone down to dust. The spec. is 5-12% fines. Your base could be limestone, granite or recycled concrete. As long as it meets the spec of 5-12%.

Peace,

Rex

To simplyfie things of what Rex said, I know hes an ICPI instructor, but this is what are instructer said. Use what the road department is using in your area for their roads.

3/4" process or stone dust depends on the site. My 2 cents.
