landscape lights

I recieved a call to do some clean up on a guys yard and when I got there he has about 5 little stubs sticking out of his front yard that were there for landscape lights. This was a model home and would be too much light on his house. He asks me to get rid of them and I dont know what the right solution would be. My first thought is to dig them out and bury the wires but dont know if i want to risk cutting any of the wires and if I want to completly cover the wires so they will be hard to find if someone wanted lighting one day. My second thought was to put in some sprinkler valve covers to be flush with the ground and you would only see these if you were walking over the ground. Please let me know how you would do this.
