I got a good laugh today... I'm monopolizing the kids!

I had 3 mothers on my case today... they each have a son who cuts grass, and they all cut together in the neighborhood for money. These kids are about 11-12 years old. They claimed I was creating a monopoly by providing additional services that these kids can't handle, thus taking all their business. So I point to the lawn I just cut (1/4 acre), and ask the kids how much they would charge. The 3 kids discussed it and agreed on $20. I told them all I do is cut the lawn... and my price is more than theirs.
"but you have weed wackers. Its not fair we can't do all that!"
"Isn't that part of the job? When you cut grass, you are supposed to cut all of it arent you?"

There was a moment of silence, then the parents chimed back in on how it wasn't fair. I told them that if the customers want the kids to do their lawns then the kids can do them. I don't care. I laughed and walked away. Didn't even bother mentioning license/insurance. I understand a kid trying to make money, but c'mon!

We don't have that problem. I have a few customers with able-bodied youngens' and all the equipment in the garage and they still hire me.We two types of people around here (kids included) the type that works 80 hours a week and the type that wants to do absolutly nothing.

I would ask them (the parents) two questions. 1. How much do THEY pay their kids to cut their grass. 2. How many kids do THEY (their kids) have to feed.

So, kids are only allowed to have paper routes?

i think kids should be allowed to make money too, shouldnt they?

i agree that the mothers complaining about monopolizing is ridiculous.

are you guys so old that you forget what its like to be an enthusiastic 12 year old with some ambition other than sitting in front of the sony play station all day?

There is nothing wrong with the kids going out and making money...it's when the "mothers" start com8ing out and taking up precious time. Then, to deal on their level, you have to say something that they are going to understand. This isn't directed at the kids.

Im glad the kids want to learn how to earn money, but I think they need to learn that there is more involved then just mow, there is trimming and sidewalks to clean also. The parents should of been able to point this out to the kids, well maybe not because it doesnt seem they understand the scope of the work
