DETHATCHING high grass

Last year we were at a customers house mowing and the next door neighbor came over and said we are going on vacation for two weeks, would you mind cutting our lawn. Since we were trying to generate business in the area (the beach that is) we said ok, The lawn is the size of a postage stamp but there is one catch. the grass is ALWAYS 6 inches high. We asked them can we cut it lower and they said they didn't want us to, so we cut it for 2 weeks and never thought anything about it. It was an easy 35.00 eash time we cut.
Today that same customer called me to dethatch her lawn. The grass is still 6 inches high all the time.
My question is, Can grass that high be dethatched ?

Also, explain to her that if not, you will be tearing out alot of good healthy grass (more than usual).

Thank you, Dad - for always being the dad that you were. You truly are my hero. You always were.
