Top dressing can be a huge money maker if done right. I buy mine from my mulch supplier. I use either orgro or com-pro (depending on what they have at the time), rent a mulch blower or hydro mulcher machine and blow it onto the property. I normally charge $100 per 1k square feet and spread .75 to 1 cu yd per. Topdressing is by far one of the best things you can do for a lawn but it's expensive and there is only a small market for it.

I was the first one to start doing it in my town. I charge 200 a yd. I use compost. I use one yd per 1k. I rake it into existing lawn, come back in a 3 months its great. Come back in a yr and honestly, I cant believe the results I'm getting, the worse the soil and lawn was, the bigger the transformation.

Its not for every customer, if they actually know that thier crappy soil is the problem cause theve tried everything else than its a good sell. I dont start with it cause its the most expensive thing I can do to improve a lawn.
(I mean start with it in my sales pitch)

Ive been trying to price it so I can make more money than I do cutting. As much or more as I do with a mulch install. I have no blower or access, this is all wheelbarrow stuff for me. (smaller lawns obv.)

-edit-- I always do heavy overseed with the best grass seed I can get.
