Back yard renovation

I'm a new home owner in Southern N.H and I need to "re-do" my back yard. The front lawn is absolutely beautiful but the backyard has been neglected and looks awful. The previous owners had "ideas" for the back but never followed through completing them or the backyard. The top soil is very rocky in the back and there is a slight incline the further away you go and is also sloped away from the house. I will be doing the work myself and was wondering what type of equiptment would be best to skim the top few inches to get up whatever is growing there so I can prepare the yard for raking and seeding. I will be using rental equiptment since the area I'll be working with is 200 feet from the road and up a paved driveway which I do not want to damage. I was looking into a Bobcat with a box rake attachment, but my local rental store does not carry them.

Thanks in advance

you're probably on the right track, not knowin the yard and all.
There is an attachment for the bobcat called a rock hound that will remove the rocks from the soil and leave the soil prepared for seed.
