Briggs Intek 16.5 Engine

This is a single cylinder Briggs - Intek Model 313777 in a Husky garden tractor that has sat unused for a couple of years. It had less than 50 hours on it when it was mothballed. I am trying to get her going to give to my friend for his personal lawn and need help.

I can start it by primeing the air intake but it dies as soon as that gas is used. The Gas tank was drained before it was put away. I have replaced the fuel lines and fuel filter, and sprayed Chemtool cleaner in several times. Still no luck.

Another possibly related problem..... but probably not This large single cylinder has always been rather hard to crank. If the battery is not really charged, it has problems getting past the compression cycle. In the past, I could turn the flywheel 1/4 turn by hand and the starter would do it's job. Now, turning the quarter turn seems a lot harder and the battery has to have virtually a full charge to get it to crank.

I don't want to spend a lot of money on it since I am giving it away. Does anyone have any input to offer?

Take the carb. off and clean it out good with carb. & choke cleaner and that should fix the run part, Adjust the valves and that should fix the spin problem.

Wouldn't you want to change the oil, and perhaps even drop a teaspoon down the spark plug hole before you start it?

As you read it's a little late for the oil in the cylinder since he has already tried to start it,But it's always a good idea to change the oil in a engine that has sat for a long period of time.

Briggs has a lot of problems with the singles and the camshafts. the hard starting could be due to a camshaft. but if it has been doing it from the word go, it probably is just valves out a little bit.

The oil was changed before I put it away. It is still clear. I did not know to oil the cylinder before trying to crank it. Hope I did not screw up too bad.

The additives in the oil dissipate and loose their properties just sitting around over a extended period of time, For a mere 3 or 4 bucks it's best to go ahead and change it again before putting it back into service.
