Exmark Metro 26" Mess Finally Solved

After much time, effort and debate, Exmark has finally decided to take back the lemon that was my 05 Metro 26". Although they will not be giving me a refund, they have offered me one of the following choices:

06 Metro 26" ($1 850 Canadian)
06 Metro 21" with Kawasaki/BBC ($1 450/Canadian)
06 Metro 21" with Honda/BBC ($1 750/Canadian)

My dealer suggested avoiding the 06 Metro 26". He had a book from Exmark that highlighted the changes and he felt that the changes would help with durability but not with performance, especially mulching as no upgrades to the unit's mulching capability were included in the book from Exmark.

I don't really need another 21" unit as I already have a 21" toro proline with the suzuki engine but to make the best of a bad situation, I am leaning toward taking one of the two 21" units.

I paid $1 820 Canadian + tax for the 05 Metro 26". Therefore, to take the smallest financial hit, I'd probably be better off with the Honda powered 21" but my dealer felt that the Kawasaki was a better and more powerful engine that would allow the mower to mulch better as well. However, I'd be taking a bigger financial hit with that one.

Any suggestions as to what I should do? Does anyone have experience with the Kawasaki or Honda engine on the Exmark/Toro 21" ?

I can't offer any help on your choice but I can say that I'm glad that you got this resolved. I have been following your struggle with the 26 and it's good to know you're being taken care of!

Go with the Kawasaki. The Honda is gutless with no torque. In tough mulching, the Kawasaki will keep chugging along. The Honda will bog down and die. I have used both, and there is no comparison. Get the Kawasaki.

Thanks for the replies and support. I'm surprised so many of you prefer the Kawasaki over the Honda. I thought the Honda was the champion of all small engines. I'm also suprised that a lot of you claim that that the Honda is underpowered and under torqued. That might explain why people with the Honda commercial 21" units never had good results mulching. I still don't understand how the Honda powered unit could be $300 more than the Kawasaki unit. Is the Honda that much better or simply overpriced?

Honda thinks their $hit is made of gold, and they charge that way for it.

Thanks to everyone for all of the input. I decided to accept the Honda powered Exmark Metro 21" with BBC for the simple reason that it minimizes the financial hit I have to take on the Metro 26". If I had to pay for the unit, I would have taken the Kawasaki powered unit. Well, we'll give the Honda unit a try and see what happens. Thanks a lot to everyone for their help. I am glad to get this 26" Metro mess out of the way.
