too much compression? 16hp briggs

im working on getting the lawn tractor ready for spring cleanups, very hard to crank over, new battery and starter.... if i take out the spark plug, it turns over really fast, but with the plug in, it doesnt seem to have enough to turn it over... even rotating the motor by hand through the compression stroke is difficult...any ideas...

How about posting the model and type numbers so we can take a look at which 16 this is.

Check the connection on the starter and your battery ground cable.

Also, it may have a compression release valve. I'm sure RestoRob would know based off the model.

iv e checked all the connections, all is clean and tight, i am recharging the battery now, just in case... but its almost new...... it seems like the isnt enough power to turn it over....if i take the spark plug out, it turns over like crazy.....thanks in advance for any advise you might have..(besides burning it) hahahhahha

Sounds like the valves need adjusting Gentler Dave lol, Remove the valve cover then rotate the engine over by hand until you reach top dead center compression stroke using a screw driver in the spark plug hole. Once at TDC hold the screw driver touching the piston and rotate clockwise past TDC until you see the screw driver move down inside the hole 1/4". Now loosen the jam screw in the center of the adjustment nut and adjust to .005-.007" both intake and exhaust, Hold the adjuster nut with your wrench while tightening the jam screw. It may take a couple times to get it right because when tightening the jam screw it could throw the adjustment out so check after tightening.
If the valves are loose the compression release will not function properly and cause the problem you have.
