Excess grease and dirt buildup on the block. Grass trapped around the cooling fins and shroud. These are a couple of things and one other is not running the engine at the fastest setting.

First we need to know more about your specific engine (model/spec) this would help us know if you have an air cooled or liquid cooled.

If you would quit running that dern rocket engine fuel through it, you would'nt have that problem.
No; seriously, how hot is it getting, really?
If, for some reason you have way too much heat in those jugs, your motor will, in short order, cook itself if that is not the problem already. Over heating can be caused by too high air-to-fuel mix, by blocked/clogged cooling shroud, no water flow (if applicable), or, by high friction. If friction is your source of heat then it is time to put 'er in the trash pile. Every other cause can be addressed.

Remove the engine shroud and inspect/clean the cooling fins around the cylinder. I assume this is an air cooled engine because it is on a JD tractor.

Change the oil and add a synthetic motor oil. If this doesnt help then you should clean/adjust the carb on it because the motor is running too lean.

I agree with JIM, how hot is red hot?

I would _not_ run that engine until you resolve this. You are seriously asking for shrapnel in your eye! Increased friction is directly proportional to increased temperature and vise versa. If she lets go at WOT, then....!!! You did at least supply the info for which RestroRob has pleaded and repeated (see post#3 at top of this forum) until he is blue in the face; what is the model, serial, engine and part numbers, color code, well, maybe not quite.

First make sure oil level is ok. Check fan shrowd for debris or blockage to the screen on top of engine including checking hood vents and if applicable the shrowd inside the hood. Check the ehaust pipe and muffler to make sure there is no blockage,no bent pipe or crushed or plugged muffler. If all these are clear then you may have a valve issue. Also are you running engine at low throttle since you are only pulling the spreader ? How many hours and when was oil changed ? Just a few suggestions. I am no expert .
