I would think it helps. It best it's a good marketing tool and at least- your competitors probably have one already. A web site is basically the 2006 version of a listing in the yellow pages.
A rumour without a leg to stand on will get around some other way.

More and more people are turning away from paper ads and just browsing the internet for local businesses so it definitely can't hurt. Lets say I do a web search for a local grass cutter and see that theres Bob's Professional Grass Shaving and Henrys Lawn Care. Unders Bob's company it shows just a phone number and maybe an address but for Henrys company it shows a phone number and a website address where I can now find pictures of jobs already done, a contact form, estimate form, testimonials etc. Which one looks more professional and provides me with more information? Get a website but don't make it crappy. If your website looks like crap customers will think your business is crap. Looks and ease of use are everything in the online world.

First, to answer your question: No, no, and no.

But it helps, I ran my first 4 years without, just this last winter decided to put something online.

It's cool, something to do when yard work is slow.

It's so cheap to maintain, that my advice is to have a website even if it's only a single page.

Even if you got no work off of it.

In todays day and age you have to have a website (and I'm not just saying that because I do websites). I know that when I go to places like and look for someone in the area - the first thing I do is look for a website link - be in a grocery store, hair salon, or lawncare. I'm much more likely to contact a place that has a website because I'm already comfortable with them because I checked out their site
