fh500v charging problem (elect. start)

i have a great dane rider with a fh 500v engine and the battery doesnt seem to be charging. this problem seems to occur when i cut a group of houses and it runs longer than normal,,,i had local mechanic put volt meter on it and it read 10-11 volts when it should have read 14 according to mechanic,,he put it on neg terminal on battery. i would have to leave it for a week to 2 to have them fix it but figured i can check obvious things,,wires, etc,,,is there any other obvious things to check out,,i will buy what i need but when dealing with electrical,,its hard to now unless its right in front of you,,thanks
