Thinking About A Name Change.

Well ive been thinking about changing my name from "Dream Cut Lawn Care" To "Dream Scape Lawn Care & Landscaping or Dreamscape Lawn Care or Dream Scape Landscaping. I want to change the name because i think when customers or potential customers hear Dream Cut they think i only cut grass when i want to be sure the people understand with out reading my card that i do offer landscaping services. Theres alot of places in my town that instead of lawn care use landscaping but offer lawn maintenance services. What do u guys think? Thanks! -Mitch-

I've considered changing the name of my company many, many times. I've always thought Gardener On-The-Go wasn't "professional" enough and it didn't really describe what we do but after 10 years of use, I'm kind of stuck with it. And everytime I bounce the idea of changing the name off somebody, I'm always told I'd be stupid to because it's catchy and people really seem to like it.

I do think your company name is important but I also think it's merely a piece of the overall image puzzle. My trucks, for example, have the company name lettered towards the top of the doors then the line "Landscape Maintenance" underneath. It's also this way on letterhead, business cards, signage and advertising pieces. This helps to clarify what it is we do.

I personally wouldn't spend a lot of time on a name change when there's other, and easier, ways to get the message across that you do more than simply cut lawns.

I like Dream Scape Landscaping. The other names are too wordy. Keep it simple. "Landscaping" covers the whole gamet; landscaping, irrigation, lawn care, etc. If you have that word in your title you don't have to include the words "lawn care" because consumers will just naturally assume you do that as well.

This is why I've always said here on Lawnsite that when someone is chosing their company name they need to stay away from names like "XXX Lawn Care" or "XXX Landscape Maintenance" because it's so limiting. Most LCOs who stay with this business -- even though they originally intented to do only maintenance -- get into doing larger landscaping work. But then they are limited by their company name and have to change it later, which sucks. That means you have to change your website, cards, truck lettering, uniforms, etc. Much better to start your company with a name like "XXX Landscaping" or "XXX Landscape Services" or something that allows for broader expansion in the future.

As for your flyer, I have to unfortunately be Tomas Cowell here and say it's really really bad. I don't have time to go into details other than saying the whole thing is bad. Every part. The pictures don't impress me at all. The layout is amateurish. It doesn't have anything compelling that makes me want to call. It's just bad all the way around. I'd spend some time researching flyers here on Lawnsite and see what some of the others have done in the past and try to figure out a way to make yours nicer. It doesn't have to be full-color, professionally laid out, etc. But it definitely needs to be a lot better than what you've done so far. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I am sure this is not encouraging for you to read. But I am just trying to be brutally honest only in an effort to help.

Now that's a decent flyer!

Dreamscapes now owes Joleham $100, methinks.
