holiday lighting question?

I am working up an idea for the city that I live in for the downtown lighting. What I am thinking is putting a type of "flood light" at the bottom of the tree trunk and having the light shine up the canopy of the tree. I'm thinking different colors for different times of the year such as red and green for chrismas, orange for holoween and such. Anyway, my question is has anyone done anything like this that might have pros and cons, pics, or some advice for me. I think if it is done right it could be a really cool thing. Thanks
